To assist in providing that gift, here are some recommended questions about legal affairs and documents that serves as checklist for your aging parents or loved ones:

• Are all your important legal and financial documents in a safe and secure place where at least one trusted person has access to them?

• Do you have a legal will? Have you taken legal action to protect your assets if you die? 

• Have you legally appointed someone you trust to represent you regarding personal, financial, and health care decisions if you cannot make these decisions yourself?

• Do you keep financial records like bank accounts, loans, CD's and tock certificates organized in one place? If so, does someone you trust know where that is? 

• Do you have a lawyer or financial adviser? 

• What types of insurance do you have and where do you keep your policies? 

• Have you researched community resources you would prefer to use, such as home care, nursing services, and long term care communities?

Planning ahead and preparing will help to remove much of the stress that takes place during chaotic times. If you know what your options are now, you will be better prepared to make the best decisions for the future.
