Seniors Stepping Into Spring
Spring is finally here, and with the warmer weather comes the opportunity for each of us to be more active. This is especially important for seniors, as studies show that older adults who engage in activities that are both mentally and physically stimulating tend to be healthier and have an overall better quality of life.
There are many activities the entire family can enjoy outside this time of year. Trips to the zoo, picnics in the park, and tours of local landmarks are easy on the family budget and present a wonderful opportunity for bonding, and at the same time encourage getting in some much needed exercise after the long winter months. Check your local paper for events such as outdoor concerts and plays. Support your local economy by purchasing groceries at the farmers market, where you can make a day of it with free activities and entertainment. Seniors and children are also often entitled to discounts or free passes to places like the Botanical Gardens and Museums, so take full advantage of these offers. Intergenerational activities are beneficial to both the younger and older members of the family, so keep this in mind as you plan activities that the entire family can enjoy.
If you are looking for more structured activities, many local senior centers offer field trips and exercise programs specifically designed for older adults. The local Y and other fitness centers may also have group classes such as water aerobics or others that are not strenuous and that anyone can participate in. If you would like information about activities in your area, contact your Eldercare Specialist for assistance in locating local programs.
Another important activity this time of year is Spring Cleaning. De-cluttering the home can actually improve the safety of your older loved one’s environment. In addition to the safety factor, our physical environment can affect our emotional state, so after the task is completed you may find you just feel better in general! If you need help with this, keep in mind some organizations such as St. Andrew’s Senior Solutions do not only provide health care services, but also provide supportive services such as housekeeping, minor home repairs and help with errands. If you simply do not have the time or energy, then look to the community resources for help.
With the recent rainy weather, we should have a beautiful May filled with flowers. Take time to stop and smell the roses this year. Enjoy Spring, and make it a healthy and happy one!
