Osteoporosis and Men at Risk

Osteoporosis is a bone thinning disease, resulting in a painful, weakening of the bones. Osteoporosis causes the skeleton to weaken and bones to break under the slightest strain or during routine activity. Certain fractures, such as hip or spine, are threatening to the independence of aging loved ones.

While osteoporosis has gained an increase in national recognition as a major women's health problem, the impact of this disease on men is on the rise. One in every eight men older than 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture; this risk is greater than his risk of prostate cancer. Approximately two million American men suffer from osteoporosis and an additional 3.1 million men are at risk for developing the disease.

Here is what you can do to help prevent osteoporosis:

  • Eat a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D

  • Work out with light weights

  • Avoid smoking and excessive drinking

  • Ask your doctor about a bone-density test

As always, it is important to talk to your doctor before you make any major changes in your diet or exercise routine. Communication with a trusted physician is the most important step in protecting yourself from osteoporosis.
